Team & Journey

The Founders

Hi! Jeff and Lee Bednar here. We bought 2.6 acres in Lucas, TX in 2014 and established Profound Microfarms. We immersed ourselves in learning hydroponic methods and building industry relationships for three years while building our farm. In May 2017, Profound made its first sale, to a Chef. It was a fantastic feeling getting to see our produce served at one of the best restaurants in Dallas! We also saw an opportunity in working with Chefs and we started focusing on DFW’s burgeoning farm-to-table restaurant scene. We continued to grow niche products for chefs, delivering to restaurants multiple times per week. We worked around the clock to build our solid reputation for quality and consistency around town.

In 2018, Profound Foods received a USDA grant to create a local "food hub." A food hub is simply a business that helps small farmers grow by offering a combination of production, distribution and marketing services. Initially, the hub’s online store was only open to professional Chefs. Profound grew very rapidly and by the end of 2019 we were serving 130 restaurants!

We began retail sales in March 2020, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. We offer weekly home delivery and pickup outpost options for home consumers. This has been an exciting and educational new endeavor for all of us on the Profound team. We are grateful to have this resilient and curious community - you all make this journey possible!

What’s a “food hub”?

Over 50 farmers, ranchers, and artisans from North Texas are part of our food hub. A food hub aggregates, markets, and distributes products from these producers, giving them more resources to focus on their real passions - growing and making food. This simplifies life for farmers, saving them from hustling between restaurants and retailers one by one, hunting down payments, finding new customers, etc.

It makes life easier for buyers too! It’s hard for chefs to email, call, and text 40 farms individually regarding orders, deliveries, and payments. A food hub centralizes all of these disparate operations into one single system for communication, ordering, delivery, and payments.
